365mc has recently succeeded in developing an AI algorithm capable of predicting the occurrence of sleep apnea during sedation anesthesia, through joint research with Ewha Womans University's professors Kang Yoon-chul (College of Business Administration) and Kim Jin-woo (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Ewha Womans University Medical Center).
Sleep apnea is a condition where a patient temporarily stops breathing, reducing oxygen supply to vital organs such as the brain and heart, which can lead to severe complications. Sedation anesthesia, in particular, can suppress respiratory function, increasing the likelihood of apnea during surgery and the recovery process, which can significantly impact patient safety and surgical success.
Until now, guidelines or tools to predict the occurrence of sleep apnea have been limited. In this context, the joint research team from both institutions utilized advanced AI technology to analyze various data from surgical patients, identify risk factors for the occurrence of sleep apnea, and successfully develop an AI algorithm capable of predicting apnea with an accuracy of nearly 90% before surgery.
Based on the successful research results, the two institutions plan to submit a paper targeting international journals or conferences in the fields of Medical and Computer Science this year. Using the reliability of the paper, they intend to obtain CDSS certification from the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) and move into a large-scale commercialization phase.
